AboutDeparting the Pattern exists as a valuable online resource to help you take control of your financial future.
Hey there, I’m glad you found me! My name is Dan, and I started “Departing The Pattern” to help my fellow aviation geeks with their personal finances. Here you will find adaptable solutions to finding the financial freedom and education you need. If you find yourself asking, “How do I pay off my student loans so I can focus on my business or my life goals?”, “How should I make sure I’m prepared for a financial emergency?” or “How do I find life insurance as a pilot?”…you will fit right in.
Through practical advice, stimulating discussions, and personal stories, I hope to inspire you to take meaningful action with your finances. Crippling debt does NOT have to be a fact of life. I took on over $100,000 in student loans for a degree I’m not even using. I spent years working my way out of a financial pit. Even though I had to make sacrifices to find my financial freedom, I will never regret any of these experiences. The journey is what inspired me to help others find their own hope and achieve their own goals.
Meet Dan Kellermeyer
I graduated from Purdue University in 2009 with a degree in Aviation. I came out with my pilot’s license, over $100,000 in student loans, and faced a virtually non-existent job market for new pilots. Even if I did find a flying gig, a rookie pilot can expect a starting salary of about $20,000 per year (I wish I was joking). I couldn’t survive with student debt that high and a salary so low. I hit pause on my dream job and took a full-time position in sales.
Never learning how to properly budget my money, I lived a “Play now, Pay Later” lifestyle, and it caught up to me quickly! I figured I could afford the minimum payments on my credit cards, so I must be doing OK, but it wasn’t long before most of my paycheck was going towards credit cards, student loans, and a car payment. I was living paycheck to paycheck, routinely over-drafting my checking account, and losing sleep. It was time for a change.
I took inspiration from others who found financial freedom by paying off their debt, and decided I too wanted to live a life where I wasn’t held hostage by debt payments. I remember doing my first budget and the sense of relief it brought. My budget told me I could make all my monthly payments and have just a tad leftover for myself. I instantly slept better even though I knew I had a long journey ahead of me.
During this journey, I met my wonderful wife Tracy. Tracy and I had similar backgrounds, and we shared the same passions. This meant she was also on her own path to financial health. It took a few years, but we were both able to break free of all our consumer debt, and we paid cash for our wedding. Did that feel good!
By starting our marriage on a strong financial foundation, we are free to focus on creating as many wonderful memories together as we can.
I am passionate about helping others finding the best way out of debt and planning for the future. I hope my site inspires you to take action, and I look forward to hearing your success stories. Feel free to drop me a line, I’d love to hear from you!
